Ultimate Guide to Planning a Destination Wedding in Folegrandros Island

Hello friend, chances are you were searching for a wedding photographer in Folegandros and found us here. We love Greek islands, especially Folegandros!
If it weren't for Santorini, the small, naked Folegandros would be world famous. Or to be more precise: Folegandros is Santorini without tourists. With the graceful capital Chora built between the walls of a Venetian fortress, it represents the most beautiful cliff backdrop of the Cyclades. With its beauty and authenticity, the island has become an insider tip for Cycladic lovers, who find a pure dose of the magical essence of the Aegean here. A walk, a swim on the beach, a visit to the small folklore museum in Ano Meria, a meeting with other people who love the essence of the Greek islands: that is the seductive thing about visiting Folegandros.

1) How to Get to Folegandros
Since there is no airport on Folegandros, ferry is the only way to get there. About 4-5 ferries a week to/from Athens and the main Cyclades (Santorini, Ios, Paros, Naxos). Some more rare ferry connections to the surrounding island (Syros, Milos, Sifnos, Serifos). Ferry tickets are available in the Chora in a small travel agency and at the port of Folegandros.
2) What to see in Folegandros
Folegandros has an area of 32 sq km and about 600 inhabitants. The island, which has been inhabited since the early Cycladic period, was first settled by the Carians and the Phoenicians. The Cretans followed later with their leader Folegandros, who was the son of Minos. The island owes its name to him. The capital of Folegandros is Chora, which was built around the fortress on the top of a steep rock 200m above sea level.
The three villages of Chora, Karavostrassis and Pano Media are symbols of the urban and religious architecture of the Cyclades. The jewel of Folegandros and its pulsating center is the spectacular chora, which is located on a plateau on the edge of a cliff. Whitewashed houses with colorful windows, bougainvilleas and jasmine, which smell the small cobbled streets - this is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful medieval villages of the Cyclades. There is a happy and peaceful atmosphere.
In the evening, the whole island meets in the city center to dine under the trees, drink a rakomelo in the central square, lined with two churches, and go for a walk in the small streets. Every evening Pounda Square offers a view of sunsets, which are among the most spectacular in the Aegean. At the foot of the northeast cliff is the Chrisospilia Cave, a unique natural monument, the center of a strange youth cult with rich stalactite formations and ancient inscriptions. There are of course a number of attractive beaches on Folegandros, among which Angali and Ayios Nikolaos are particularly noteworthy. In the northern part of the island lies Ano Meria, a small picturesque village, in the heart of which stands the large parish church of Agios Georgios with an unusually shaped white iconostasis. The island's small folkloric museum is also located here and gives an impression of how the locals used to live.

4) Beaches in Folegandros
Folegandros has no shortage of beaches and exploring them is one of the best things to do on the island. Even so, the most popular beaches seem practically deserted. Only a handful of people are soaking up the sun or splashing in the azure water. Many of the beaches aren’t easily reached; you need to hike or rent a boat to reach them.
Katergo Beach
A pristine oasis with some of the bluest waters crashing against its shoreline. The fastest way to get there is by boat. Its seclusion is its biggest appeal, but that also means the sight of an eatery is not for another three miles or so. Pack your own food and drinks, and you’ll feel at home at a beach retreat.
Livadaki Beach
Another of the island’s elusive beaches. Boats will take you there from Agali Beach. Otherwise, an adventurous hike from Ano Meria will take you through a steep terrain before you can lay eyes on this paradise.
Ligaria
Located 8 km north-west of Folegandros town. Small and beautiful beach with pebbles. This beach is pretty secluded and ideal for isolation.
Agios Nikolaos Beach
Agios Nikolaos can only be reached by foot or by boat. It’s about a 20 minute hike from Agali Beach or a boat. Supposedly the boat runs every 30 minutes, but we only saw it take some passengers over to Agios Nikolaos once the entire time we were hiking to the beach and hung out on the beach. Be sure to make arrangements with the boat captain if you hope to only hike one way or get a round trip boat ride.
Agios Georgios Beach
Ambeli
Located 8 km north-west of Folegandros town, a rather small quiet beach, mostly with pebbles and some rocky spots.
Vorina
The green stone hill rolls down the eastern side of Folegandros to Vorina Beach below Chora. To reach the beach, follow the footpath from Chora to Ano Meria or hire a private boat to get to the beach. There are no services, so bring plenty of water and whatever else you need for your day in the sun.
And many more...
