Elopement Wedding in Monteriggioni

Hello friend, chances are you were searching for a wedding photographer in Monteriggioni and found us here. For us, each couple is a friend and not a client.

Monteriggioni, whose stone halo shines from the top of a hill, is one of the most memorable towns in all of Italy. The town stands illusion-like to travellers wishing to dive into the Middle Ages and its beauty is such that Monteriggioni has played the leading role in films as well as in an episode of the popular videogame Assassin’s Creed. It dates way back, perhaps even settled in the 8th century BCE, as evidenced by the settlement unearthed near Campassini and the vast Etruscan necropolis Casone. The local tourism office markets Monteriggioni as a 'Gateway to the Middle Ages', and though hackneyed, the description fits. Enclosed by monumental walls with ramparts and 14 watchtowers, the physical structure of this fortified village has changed little since it was established in the 13th century and became a popular stop on the Via Francigena pilgrim trail. Sights include the walls, a small armour museum and the 13th-century Church of Santa Maria Assunta. There are also plenty of touristy boutiques to browse. In June and July, the streets are full of colourfully clad characters participating in one of Italy's oldest medieval festivals.As you turn off the main road to arrive Monteriggioni, you'll find a parking lot at the bottom of the hill. Leave your car here and follow the short climb to enter the small village through the Franca or Romea Gate. A few steps in and you're already in the heart of the village in the main Piazza di Roma onto which the Church of Santa Maria Assunta faces. Built at the same time as the rest of the castle, the church is in Romanesque and Gothic style. Back at that time, the piazza was a large vegetable garden that provided essential food items when the castle's population came under siege. The reputation and prestige of this particular castle has a very consolidated notoriety because Monteriggioni was cited by the “Supreme Poet” Dante Alighieri in his most famous work, The Divine Comedy:

"As with circling round

Of turrets, Monteriggioni crowns his walls;

E’en thus the shore, encompassing the abyss,

Was turreted with giants, half their length

Uprearing, horrible, whom Jove from heaven

Yet threatens, when his muttering thunder rolls."

- Dante Alighieri, Hell, tocanto XXXI, lines 40-45.
